Clostridium perfringens is a gram-positive, rod-shaped microbe that thrives in a temperature range of 25-40°C, classifying it as thermostable. As a heterotroph, it obtains its energy from the breakdown of organic compounds, specifically glucose, through fermentation, producing lactic acid as its primary metabolic byproduct. This microbe is capable of producing energy through anaerobic respiration, utilizing the fermentation products to drive its metabolic activities. The gram-positive nature of Clostridium perfringens refers to the presence of a thick peptidoglycan layer in its cell wall, which is characteristic of this type of bacterium.
