As an aerobic organism, it requires oxygen for growth and is categorized as mesophilic, thriving within moderate temperature ranges. This bacterium is non-motile and possesses flagella, yet it does not utilize them for movement. S. saprophyticus is primarily associated with various hosts, including Homo sapiens (humans), Gallus gallus (chickens), Bos (cattle), Sus scrofa (pigs), and members of the Phocidae family (seals), along with other metazoans and primates. It exhibits a free-living biotic relationship, allowing it to survive independently in various environments. Clinically, S. saprophyticus is significant due to its association with a range of health effects, particularly urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is known to cause both uncomplicated and community-acquired UTIs, bacteremia, and infective endocarditis.
