Description

Salmonella enterica strain H5 is a Gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium characterized by its spirilla shape and presence of flagella. This strain is classified as a chemoorganotroph, indicating that it derives energy from organic compounds. It typically exists in host-associated environments and is capable of forming chains or existing as singles. S. enterica H5 is mesophilic, with an optimal growth temperature of 37°C, which aligns with the body temperature of many of its hosts. This strain is known to be pathogenic and is associated with a range of health effects in various hosts, including humans (Homo sapiens), birds (Gallus gallus and Columbidae), and several other metazoan species. Health issues linked to S. enterica H5 include bacteremia, acute cholecystitis, Salmonellosis, gastroenteritis, and systemic infections. The bacterium is also responsible for foodborne illnesses, which can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress. Despite being a free-living organism, S. enterica H5 does not exhibit mobility. It has a single replicon and possesses a double membrane structure, typical of Gram-negative bacteria. Its nonsporulating nature suggests that it does not enter a dormant state, which may affect its survival under adverse conditions. The ecological insight from the traits of S. enterica H5 highlights its adaptability and role in the transmission of diseases through food sources, particularly in agricultural settings where it can infect both crop plants like Solanum lycopersicum (tomatoes) and various animal hosts. This dual-host capability emphasizes the importance of monitoring and controlling this bacterium to prevent foodborne outbreaks.
