Description

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium is a Gram-negative bacterium characterized by its spirilla shape and microaerophilic oxygen requirement. It possesses flagella, which allows for motility, although it is typically observed in chains or as single cells. As a chemoorganotroph, this bacterium derives its energy from organic compounds, thriving optimally at a temperature of 37°C, which situates it within the mesophilic range. This serovar is primarily host-associated, with a diverse array of hosts that includes Homo sapiens (humans), Gallus gallus (chickens), and various mammals and plants such as Solanum lycopersicum (tomatoes) and Hordeum vulgare (barley). This broad host range highlights its adaptability and potential for transmission across different species. S. Typhimurium is nonsporulating and has a complex genetic structure, featuring three replicons and two membranes. It is known to cause a range of health effects in humans, including bacteremia, Salmonellosis, acute gastroenteritis, and foodborne illness, leading to systemic infections and complications like gallbladder empyema and acute cholecystitis. Ecologically, the presence of S. Typhimurium in various host organisms underscores its role in food safety and public health, emphasizing the need for effective monitoring and control measures in food production and handling, particularly in agricultural settings where it can affect both animal and plant health.
