Description

Helicobacter pylori strain 3120 is a Gram-negative bacterium characterized by its spiral shape and microaerophilic oxygen requirement. It possesses flagella, which facilitate its motility, although it is classified as non-motile in terms of overall movement. This strain typically exists as single cells and is adapted to a host-associated habitat, primarily infecting Homo sapiens and various other hosts including Gallus gallus, Aves, Primates, Mammalia, Amoeba, Rodentia, and Cricetinae. Optimal growth occurs at a temperature of 37°C, placing H. pylori strain 3120 within the mesophilic temperature range. The bacterium has a simple genomic structure, containing one replicon, and is surrounded by two membranes. Despite its free-living biotic relationship, it is predominantly recognized for its pathogenicity in humans, leading to a spectrum of gastrointestinal diseases. H. pylori strain 3120 is linked to several health issues, including chronic gastric inflammation, gastric ulcers, and various forms of gastric cancer such as adenocarcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. It is also associated with functional dyspepsia, gastritis, and peptic ulcer disease. The presence of this bacterium can provoke asymptomatic mucosal inflammatory responses and conditions such as hypochlorhydria and atrophic gastritis. The ecological insight from H. pylori strain 3120 highlights its dual role as a free-living organism and a significant human pathogen, emphasizing its impact on gastric health and disease progression in different hosts. Understanding these interactions can inform treatment and prevention strategies for related gastrointestinal diseases.
