Description

Helicobacter pylori strain UM291 is a microaerophilic, gram-negative bacterium characterized by its spirilla shape and the presence of flagella. It is primarily found in the stomachs of various hosts, including Homo sapiens, Gallus gallus, and other mammals and birds. This strain is notable for its free-living biotic relationship and its optimal growth temperature of 37°C, which aligns with its mesophilic nature. The bacterium displays a unique cell arrangement as singles and possesses a single replicon and two membranes. These structural features contribute to its ability to thrive in the acidic environment of the gastric mucosa. UM291 is associated with several significant health effects, particularly related to gastrointestinal diseases. It is linked to chronic gastric inflammation, gastric ulcers, and various forms of gastric cancer, including adenocarcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Other health implications include functional dyspepsia and conditions such as GERD and hypochlorhydria. The presence of H. pylori can lead to an asymptomatic mucosal inflammatory response, but it is also a known causative agent in peptic ulcer disease. Given its pathogenicity in humans, H. pylori strain UM291 highlights the complex interplay between microbial populations and host health. The bacterium's ability to induce a range of gastrointestinal disorders underscores its ecological significance within the human microbiome, where its presence can have profound implications for both health and disease.
