Description

Mycobacterium abscessus is a rod-shaped bacterium primarily found in chloraminated water. It is notable for possessing true flagella, which may contribute to its motility in aquatic environments. M. abscessus has a single replicon and is known to infect a variety of hosts, including Homo sapiens, various Metazoa, Aves, Phocidae, Rodentia, and Panthera leo. This organism is associated with several health effects, particularly in humans, where it can cause a range of infections. These include endocarditis, peritonitis, and various pulmonary diseases such as lung infections and chronic pulmonary infections. Additionally, it can lead to cervical lymphadenitis and skin infections, as well as complications in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. The bacterium is implicated in non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) and can result in disseminated infections and localized lesions. The ecological insight derived from the habitat of M. abscessus suggests that its presence in chloraminated water may play a role in its transmission to various hosts, including humans. This highlights the importance of water quality and the potential for opportunistic infections in susceptible populations, especially those with compromised immune systems. Understanding the environmental reservoirs of M. abscessus is crucial for developing effective public health strategies to mitigate its impact on human health and manage infections associated with this pathogen.
