Clostridium botulinum is a gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium that thrives in a temperature range of 37°C to 40°C, falling under the category of mesophile thermotypes. As a heterotroph, it derives its energy from the breakdown of organic matter, specifically through fermentation. This microbe produces energy by converting glucose into pyruvate, which is then converted into lactic acid, acetic acid, and carbon dioxide. Upon staining with Gram's method, C. botulinum exhibits a characteristic Gram-positive staining pattern, meaning that the cell wall retains the crystal violet stain and appears blue under the microscope.
