Clostridium tetani is a rod-shaped, Gram-positive bacterium that thrives in a warm environment, preferring temperatures between 28°C to 40°C, placing it in the temperature preference category of mesophilic. As a heterotroph, it obtains its energy by breaking down complex organic molecules, specifically requiring a supply of nutrients from its surroundings. This organism is an anaerobe, meaning it cannot tolerate the presence of oxygen, and instead, relies on fermentation to produce energy. During fermentation, C. tetani converts glucose into lactic acid, pyruvate, and ATP, allowing it to sustain its metabolic processes. The Gram-staining characteristic of C. tetani is positive, indicating the presence of a thick peptidoglycan layer in its cell wall. This bacterium typically exists as a single rod or a short chain of rods, with some species forming characteristic drumstick-like structures. Clostridium tetani is ubiquitous, found in various body sites, including the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory tract, of animals and humans.
